I like symmetry and balance, so I try to have an equal number of items on each side of the fireplace. Most of the shelves have three items that are pretty equal in size. I also like to balance color, so you can see here there is just enough red on either side to add a fun pop of color without it being too overwhelming. Especially, since there are five bright red stockings on the mantle.

Christmas trees are one of my favorite Christmas decorations, so I used several on the shelves in a variety of sizes and colors. How cute is the red one I recently bought at Walmart?! I also like to use Christmas scrapbook paper in my frames that sit out year round. The Santa Claus paper is a fun touch.

There are more Christmas trees on the other side as well as some cute animals. I think it gives it a bit of a winter wonderland feel. As you can see, I keep some of my year round decor out and mix it in with my Christmas decor. On this side, my favorite item is the cute penguin sitting on the second shelf.
